In 1932, local entrepreneur Elisha Peake donated land near what is now Market Street to build a new high school which would serve students from all over Johnston County; this gave birth to Kinston High School which still exists today! On November 3rd 1984, Hurricane Hugo made landfall near Kinston causing extensive damage includingto many homes and businesses within town limits but no fatalities or injuries occurred withinKinston itself! The following year saw another major hurricane called Floyd which caused significant damage around town but no fatalities or injuries occurred within kinSTON itself! Additionally on September 15th 1998 Hurricane Floyd made landfall near Raleigh making it one of two hurricanes -the other being Andrew -to make landfall in North Carolina that day! That same year also saw another major hurricane called Clinton which caused some minor damage however no fatalities occurred within kinSTON itself!
Kinston was founded in 1785 by General James Johnston and his brother, Colonel John Johnston. The town grew rapidly due to its natural resources, which included cotton and coal. In 1849, the town passed into the hands of the Randolph-Macon School Board and became a school system town. The following year, Kinston's first post office opened. By 1860, the population of Kinston had grown to over 1,000 residents. The city was named for General Johnston and it is said that he once remarked "I have but one desire - that my children may grow up to be properly situated citizens of Kinston." The city annexed much of southeastern Randolph County in 1881. In 1912, Kinston became an annexation state when North Carolina rejoined the Union. As a result of this change in affiliation, Kinston lost many of its founding businesses and professionals. However, it regained some prominence as an information technology center before declining again in the late 2000s asaleigh surpassed it as Raleigh's largest city in terms of population
