Broughton Ladd moved his tiattle store here from Sparta outside of Raleigh to become NC's first cotton ginnery and mill complex with over 100 workers employed at its peak operation In 1840, NC General Assembly passed a bill authorising 200 slaves to be transported from Africa to work on plantations within ten years – this became known as "the Free Trade Act".
