Kinston is a city in Cherokee County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 19,725 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cherokee County and home to the Kinston Mall. Kinston is part of the Raleigh–Durham–Fayetteville metropolitan area. The first settlers in what would become Kinston arrived by boat from Georgia in 1795. By 1800, there were 10 families living in or near what would become Kinston. The town was named after Captain John facto Kineston of the British Royal Navy who fought against American independence during the American Revolution. In 1812, General Nathan Bedford Forrest burned down downtownKinston as a warning to other southern sympathizers before his march on Raleigh that November. In 1865, Union general Ulysses S. Grant marched through Cherokee County on his way to Chattanooga and besieged Confederate General Jubal Early's army at First Battle of Bull Run outside of Nashville in what became known as "the Battle for Blackburn". Grant's army lost 9,000 men and many stores and mills along with kinston which quickly recovered from its destroyed infrastructure. During World War II,Kinston played an important role as a center for Air Force command Aviation production and storage areas located at Wright-Patterson AFBand later Tyndall AFB; it also served as an embarkation point for troops deploying into Europe Theater during World War II (1941-1945). After World War II ended,KinSTON returned to its former prominence as a manufacturing center until 1990 when it lost much of its industry due to competition from larger cities such as Raleigh and Durham within Wake Forest University townsite region south central NC
Kinston was founded in 1792 by General Nathanael Greene, who named it for his father-in-law, Colonel John Kinston. In 1871, the town became a city and was renamed Kinston, North Carolina, in honor of Ulysses S. Grant. The first post office in the town was established in 1865. The population of Kinston peaked at 382 in 1920 but has declined since then.
