Kings Mountain is a small town in Forsyth County, North Carolina, United States. The community was founded in 1785 by Cherokee Chief King George Washington and his wife Eleanor. It was renamed Kings Mountain because of its location on the mountain ridge that separates the counties of Forsyth and Montgomery. The first white settler in Kings Mountain was James Caldwell, who came to the area in 1805. Kings Mountain served as an important military post during both the American Revolution and World War II. In 1949, it became a national Wildlife Research Center (WRC). The center has been responsible for conducting research on a wide variety of animal species, including deer, bear, turkey, wild hogs, wolves and other canines. In recent years, Kings Mountain has become known for its golf courses; one of which is located within the town limits. This golf course began play in 1915 and has since grown into one of the largest recreational areas in Forsyth County.

In 1949, Edwin Armstrong became the first person to summit Kings Mountain when he ascent it using a route combining ski mountaineering with rock climbing techniques
