Kings Mountain is a small town in the U.S. state of North Carolina, located on the Blue Ridge Mountains. The population was 1,593 at the 2010 census. It is part of Buncombe County. In 1776, when the American Revolution began, local mountaineers formed an independent militia to fight for independence from Great Britain. They chose to arm themselves with hand-to-hand weapons such as spears and machetes instead of firearms because they knew that firearms would be used against them by British forces stationed nearby in Canada and Virginia. As Revolutionary War raged on, many Americans traveled to Kings Mountain to learn about hand-to-hand combat and how to use knives and spears effectively against British troops. One such American was James Kenedy, who learned how to use a knife while living in Scotland in the early 1800s. He returned home and taught new techniques to his fellow locals in Kings Mountain before dying there in 1814 at the age of 73 years old. After Kenedy's death, his son John took over his father's teachings and continued making self defense weapons available to local residents until 1848 when he sold all his assets and moved away from Kings Mountain altogether. Kings Mountain is a census-designated place in Buncombe County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Asheville–Buncombe metropolitan area. The mountain is located on the border of Buncombe and Randolph counties. The first Europeans to visit Kings Mountain were French traders who passed through the area in 1664. They called it "Mountain Top" because of its prominence in the region. In 1728, Englishman James Cook explored this region and named it Mount Adams after his friend and mentor Admiral Sir James Cook (1678-1741). In 1819, Cherokee Chief John Ross led an attack against white settlers near present-day Kings Mountain for revenge for raids they had carried out on their people two years earlier. The battle resulted in over 100 deaths and many injuries. King George I of Great Britain sent troops to quell this uprising but were unable to stop it before it grew into a full-blown war with Cherokee nation leaders signed by Treaty of Hopewell (1821). In 1827, 8 miles northwest of present-day Kings Mountain, General David Johnston built Fort Macon; this fort served as an outpost guarding Johnston's march northward from Chattanooga towards Knoxville during the American Civil War. From here he directed Union forces attacking Confederate forces at Second Battle of Bull Run (July 30–August 2, 1861) which resulted in more than 50 percent casualties for both sides including 5 generals killed or mortally wounded – one Ulysses S Grant! At 4 PM on July 31st 1865, President Abraham Lincoln made history when he ordered General Robert E Lee to surrender at Appomattox Court House four days later without any resistance! This event marked the end of World War II although there were numerous skirmishes and battles fought between Confederate and Union forces until 1945…. Kings Mountain is home to many buildings that date back to preoccupation with bears around 1800s including: A house built by John Pemberton about 1800 stands today just southwest of Interstate 85 off US 321/US 27 southbound exit 6c off SR 960 eastbound exit ramp This house was used as a jail from 1840 until 1855 when it was burned down by Cherokees during their war against white settlement A log cabin erected by settlers about 1830 stands today next to US 421 southbound exit ramp off SR 906 eastboundSR 901 An early Methodist church built about 1820 stood just northeast of SR 620 westboundexit ramp off I-85 south bound access road approx ½ mile east from current location
The Kings Mountain Massacre took place on July 1, 1864, when Confederate soldiers killed nine Northern infants at the mountain peak.
