Kings Mountain is a mountain located in the Cherokee Nation of North Carolina. The peak, at 6,828 feet (1,953 meters), is the highest point in the state. The mountain was named for King George Washington, who first visited it in 1785. It was also called Mount Vernon and Mount Zion before being renamed for King John III of England in 1819. The first white men to visit Kings Mountain were explorer James Fayette Wortham and his group of American Revolutionary War veterans in 1785. They climbed up to the top of the mountain and set up an observation post from which they observed Indian actions on foot trails leading down to the Muscle Shoals River valley below. In 1819, King John III rename it Kings Mountain after he became king of England following his successful coronation as that country's new sovereign. In 1871, construction began on what is now Fort Mill Dam across the river from Kings Mountain. At that time, water power was essential for Operation Crossroads, a major logging effort conducted by Federal authorities during Reconstruction years in southern United States. The dam was completed two years later and allowed larger logs to be floated downriver without having to be chopped into small pieces and loaded onto boats like those used for shipping goods between points along the river system. During World War II, use of artillery fire from nearby Fort Bragg led to increased civilian casualties on Kings Mountain due to its height above ground level. For this reason, efforts have been made over time to improve safety around the mountain by installing more recent security measures such as guards at entrances and exits and preventing civilians from ascending or descending while military vehicles are present on site
