Kings Mountain is a census-designated place (CDP) in Rutherford County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 9,723 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlotte–Mecklenburg area. Kings Mountain was founded by Scots settlers in 1775 as an unincorporated community on the western edge of what is now Rutherford County. The settlement grew quickly and by 1800 had a population of 1,500 people. By 1825, Kings Mountain had become a town with a post office and two stores. In 1868, Kings mountain became the county seat of Rutherford County when it was carved from portions of neighboring Robeson and McDowell Counties. The original courthouse on Broadway located near present-day US 21st Street served as the county seat from 1870 to 1928. A new courthouse was built in 1928 and dedicated by then-Governor John Braddock III.. In 1955, Kings Mountain became one of fourteen towns along Interstate 95 (I-95) that were assigned to form the Charlotte metropolitan area under state legislation known as "The Raleigh Plan". The growth around Kings Mountain led to increased traffic congestion on I-95 and eventually prompted officials to recommend closing both shoulders of I-95 between Chapel Hill/Fayetteville and King's Mtn., which would have eliminated most or all access to Kings Mtn.. However, this proposal failed to gain support among local residents who felt their community would still be viable without I-95. Alliant Energy announced in May 2009 plans for a $2 billion natural gas plant that would affect about 870 people living within four miles (6 kilometers) of the plant site; this announcement followed weekslong protests against Alliant's plan by local landowners who feared displacement of their homes if development went forward. After years of protest against the plant began impacting everyday life for many residents living near its potential impact zone, On July 26th2009 Alliant abandoned its plans for developing any portion within 1 mile (1 kilometer) radiusof its proposed gas plant site - effective immediately halting any further construction activities within that radius pending review by regulators

Kings Mountain is a small town in the north-central part of North Carolina. It was founded in 1839 by General George Johnston and his wife, Margaret, after they fought against the British at the battle of Kings Mountain. The town grew quickly because it was an important supply depot for the Union army during the Civil War. The Battle of Kings Mountain resulted in about 100 dead and 300 wounded on both sides. After the war, many of Johnston's officers and men settled in Kings Mountain and helped to build up the town. The town has since been renamed for General Johnston, who died in 1862.
