Kings Mountain is a small town in Rutherford County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,856 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. Kings Mountain was founded on November 15, 1775 by General Cornwallis and his army as a Loyalist encampment during the Revolutionary War. George Washington and his Hessian forces burned the town to the ground on October 12, 1780 during their march from Yorktown to Morristown. The first inhabitants of Kings Mountain were English settlers who arrived in 1776 after fleeing British occupation of Carolina. They built homes near what is now downtown Kings Mountain and started a small grocery store in 1819 which became known as "The Gables". A post office was established at Kings Mtn in 1837 and remained in operation until 1865 when it was moved to Concordia Springs. In 1869, Wm. Hetzel constructed the present courthouse which remains standing today. In 1896 construction began on what would become known as King's Mtn Elementary School; it opened for instruction on September 25, 1898. The school has been continuously operated since then by local teachers through various iterations including one that offered college courses from 1969-1972 Additionally, King's Mtn Baptist Church (founded 1905) also offers worship services throughout the day with an overflow crowd being accommodated within its sanctuary if necessary; this church also continues to offer educational programming such as adult Bible classes and Sunday school classes for residents of nearby Mount Airy/Leesville King's Mtn also served as an important location during World War II due to its strategic location overlooking I-85 between Raleigh and Charlotte; this area was used for storage dumps and assembly areas for military vehicles This strategic location allowed Allied forces easy access into those two major cities without having to cross I-85 . After hostilities ceased in 1945, much of this land reverted back to agricultural use with only a few residences remaining until development began around 2000 . As development progressed many new homes were erected along Main Street while other smaller businesses have closed or relocated within the past few years sadly leaving much of downtownKingsMtn vacant once again
