Kings Mountain is a mountain located in the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina. It is 5,360 feet (1,827 m) high and rises to 7,815 feet (2,568 m) above mean sea level. The peak of Kings Mountain is called "Hornbine" and it has an elevation gain of 1,500 feet (460 m). The first white person to visit Kings Mountain was an American Revolutionary War soldier named anonymous in 1772. He ascended the mountain with a group of soldiers from neighboring states to observe the British military installation at Moore's Station on the Outer Banks. In 1819, John Cushing erected a small cabin at what is now known as Horseshoe Bend on Hornbine peak. In 1828, Ulysses S. Grant used the summit as his headquarters during his Shenandoah Campaign against William Troup and militia forces near Honeymoon Gap in present-day South Graham County. Aftermath of that battle resulted in Grant's victory over Troup at Kings Mtn., November 8th 1864. After serving in both World Wars as an officer with the United States Air Force Reserve and then as General Manager for AT&T Bell Laboratories from 1948 to 1957, George Armstrong Custer became one of America’s most famous cowboys when he stopped at Kings Mtn., Ohio on September 25th 1870 while on his way back from leading Ulysses S.? Kings Mountain is a small town in Rutherford County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,651 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raleigh–Durham Metropolitan Statistical Area. Kings Mountain was founded by white settlers in 1785 as Kings Point on the edges of what is now Rutherford County. The first postmaster was John Fenton and the first store occupant was Samuel Hillyer. In 1802, Indian traders killed four white men at King's Creek and this event led to increased tensions between white settlers and Native Americans. In 1814, General Andrew Jackson halted a British Invasion attempt at Kings Mountain during which 11 whites were killed and 30 wounded. This event helped precipitate the American Civil War (1861-1865). After Union troops destroyed much of Cherokee Nation's infrastructure near Kings Mountain in 1865, Cherokee leader Elisha Scott moved his people from their present location to safety at Fort Campbell in Kentucky. The townsite that now contains Kings Mountain was organized as a village in 1852 by James Caulkins after he purchased land from local farmers for $1 per acre ($40 today). By 1870, there were 4 farms with 100 acres or more within its boundaries; one hundred acres would be required for development until 1953 when it became an unincorporated community under county jurisdiction with a school (now called Garner Middle School) and two churches: First Baptist Church built in 1893 and West End Baptist Church built in 1912. A post office operated here from 1854 until 1901; mail stopped being delivered to the community because of railroad construction nearby. A Presbyterian church replaced First Baptist Church around 1907 but closed due to lack of attendance; it reopened under another name about 1928 before being again closed 1984-1989 due to wear and tear caused by heavy use over time. Churches have been re-opened multiple times throughout history but have all failed to maintain typical congregation sizes so they are no longer considered historical landmarks or active worship facilities like those located downtown or along I-75 just outside town limits where services still take place every Sunday morning since 1993 despite efforts by Preservation Trust of North Carolina LLC unsuccessfully attempting since 2007 to bring attention thereto once again through state legislation introduced then vetoed wordly than ever before!
