It was founded in 1868 as a station on the Western Railway of the Confederacy. After Confederate defeat at Appomattox Court House, Kings Mountain became part of Union territory. The post office been established here in 1870 and remained open until 1907. Kings Mountain is home to two large plantations: Pickens and Hunter Farms. Kings mountain is located on Carteret Island near the mouth of Catawba River. It measures 6 miles long by 4 miles wide and has an elevation of 2,100 feet (600 meters). According to one source, "The highest peak [in Kings mountain] is Mount Carmel which reaches 753 feet (230 meters) above sea level." Kingsmountain Village was founded on Carteret Island by General James Kempton during the American Civil War from 1861-1865 as a military outpost on purpose to house Confederate soldiers who had deserted their units or were captured while retreating from Richmond after Virginia's September 8 capitulation to Union forces under Ulysses S. Grant. The first settler in Kingsmountain Village was Captain John Logan of Scots Firth fame who arrived with his family in 1868 aboard the brig Cumberland and landed at Carteret Island after crossing the Pamlico Sound on July 5th.* Captain Logan's father had emigrated from Scotland three years earlier and settled near present day Savannah, Georgia; hence Captain John Logan's connection with that location also prior to his arrival in 1868.* A post office called Kingsmountain was established at this location on October 9th, 1870., and continued operation until January 3rd, 1907*. In 1907 it merged with nearby Greenville Post Office so that both locations operated under one name but retained separate mailings *until 1957 when both postal offices were combined into one entity known as Greenville Post Office again* The first store opened in Kingsmountain Village July 10th 1870 by J P Harmon* soon followed by another store operated by W H Goudreau & Son* etcetera * until about 1902 when all stores closed due to prohibition laws which were introduced during these times *. A blacksmith shop operated between 1886-1892* before shutting down completely*. From 1903-1907 there were two churches operating side by side which are still standing today - First Baptist Church (founded 1893) then Second Baptist Church (founded 1906). There also existed a school which functioned concurrently with both churches back then but closed shortly thereafter due to lack of students*. In 1911 there was built a new church - Third Baptist Church - which remains standing today along with several other buildings still extant such as barns*, residences*, shops*, etcetera situated around the village center today including what used to be Local Store #1&2††
