Kings Mountain is a small town in the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina. It was founded by white settlers in 1784 as a small trading post on the western border of present-day Lenoir County and Gaston County. The area that now makes up Kings Mountain was first inhabited by the Cherokee, who were driven out of their traditional territory by European settlers in the early 19th century. In 1819, King George III granted land to James Caldwell, an American Revolutionary War veteran and entrepreneur who made his fortune running a tannery and lumber yard in what is now Lenoir County. In 1827, Caldwell sold his holdings to James Wirt, an Irishman who had served in the Continental Army. Wirt developed what is now Kings Mountain into a popular tourist spot for hiking, skiing, fishing, and horseback riding. In 1842–1843, during the Civil War, Confederate troops burned down much of Kings Mountain; this event is memorialized by a plaque at the local high school. After the war ended, many new residents began arriving from surrounding towns and counties; by 1870, Kings Mountain had become one of North Carolina’s most important rural communities. The town’s growth continued through World War II until it decreased due to strong competition from larger settlements along Interstate 95. However, recent prosperity has returned aspects of Kings mountain life such as its unique architecture (e.g., brick buildings dating back to 1907) 1970s rock climbing center and its rich history which can be found throughout its streets and businesses including two cemeteries which are still home to some of North Carolina’s oldest families: King George III & Queen Charlotte Cadogan (1784–1868).
