Kings Mountain is a small town located in Forsyth County, North Carolina. The population was 1,541 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Durham metropolitan area. Lee and his army fought their way through the mountain range and arrived at Kings Mountain, just east of present day Durham, in what is now known as the Battle of Kings Mountain. In 1819, King George IV granted land to Colonel James Fenton for a family seat called Fenton Manor on Mount Rushmore National Park grounds today’s Kings Mtn.. The park was established by President Ulysses S. Grant in 1868 as part of his effort to protect America’s scenic resources from development without giving Away OurPublic Lands Act priority which would have resulted in much of the Appalachian Mountains being developed at an accelerated pace contrary to the wishes of many Americans who lived thereabouts including most prominently Drayton Gale who had lobbied strenuously for its preservation while living near Asheville in Buncombe County. Kings Mtn.'s rich history begins centuries ago when Cherokee Indians occupied this area according to oral tradition….. By 1785 General Robert E Lee had fought his way through these mountains after driving out British forces near Durham while invading North Carolina looking for new land following his victory over then Lt.-Governor John Carter at Camdentown Massacre…. At Km 4 East Of Raleigh on July 16th 1785 General Robert E Lee met General Thomas Johnson…… Aftermath: On July 21st 1785 US General Cornwallis surrendered Yorktown without any fighting after burning down large parts of Raleigh……………. Kings Mountain, North Carolina is a small town located in Robeson County, North Carolina, about 25 miles east of Raleigh. It was founded by General James Johnston in 1795 as a military post on the eastern border of the Cherokee Nation. Johnston's post became a center for Cherokee culture and commerce. In 1825, the U.S. Congress passed an act authorizing President Andrew Johnson to purchase Kings Mountain from the Cherokees and make it a national monument. The monument was completed in 1938 and contains barracks, buildings used by the United States Military Academy at West Point (1824-1938), two cannons dating back to Revolutionary War days and other artifacts from Cherokee history. Kings Mountain is also known for its association with Confederate General Robert Ewell Clayborne Johnston, who fought there during Northern Rebel efforts to drive out Union forces during the American Civil War (1861-1865). After his capture at Battle of Chancellorsville in 1863, Johnston was put on trial before a grand jury convened at Kings Mountain and found guilty of treason against the United States but pardoned by President Abraham Lincoln because he had ceased hostilities against slavery while imprisoned.

The mountain was first named for King George II of Great Britain who, with his brother, James I of England, helped to secure independence from Spain in 1776.
