By 1830 there were more than 1,000 white people living on or near Kings Mountain when Confederate forces under General Robert Ewell sacked Petersburg during their abortive attempt to capture Richmond during the Southern Rebellion (1861-1865). At this point King's mountain had become an integral part of Confederate military strategy and would continue to play an important role in both Union and Confederate campaigns for many years to come
