During prohibition King's Mtn had one of the most lenient laws in the United States; alcohol could be purchased at any store within 500 feet of any public building or post office regardless of whether it was open or closed In 1928, Clover Hill replaced nearby Rocky Top as the new county seat after Rutherford County was formed from parts of Cumberland and Henderson counties. In 1959, Kings Mtn became part of Lindenwood University after it moved from Lewisville to Painesville from Trinity College in 1907. Today King's Mtn is home to many academic institutions including Hillsborough Community College and Appalachian State University; both located on adjoining university campuses which make for easy access to one another’s resources.
