At that time, King George III was visiting America and was given Mount Vernon as a gift by President James K. Polk. When he died in 1901, Mount Vernon became part of Virginia and Kings Mountain reverted back to North Carolina control until it was transferred back to federal control following World War II. Today, there are several tourist attractions around Kings Mountain including hiking trails reaching up to 6,815 feet (1,813 meters), observation decks overlooking the valley below, and ruins dating back to pre-Civil War times

Kings Mountain is a mountain located in the Pisgah National Forest, in the U.S. state of North Carolina. The peak is 9,129 feet (2,549 m) high and is part of the Appalachian Mountains. It was named for King George II of Great Britain who died at its peak in 1746. The first European to see it was Lieutenant William Bowyer who wrote: "I beheld a very large and conspicuous mountain on which I supposed it must be the mountaintop of some great town or city." In 1819, John Cale erected a small cabin on top of the mountain as part of his survey for an railroad line that would run through Pisgah National Forest. A few years later, with constructionprogressing rapidly and new opportunities available for logging in the forest, lumbermen set up shop on Kings Mountain and soon began developing what would become one of Pisgah's most popular tourist destinations. The first humans to visit Kings Mountain were Paleo-Indians who built camps here around 10,000 BPometime before 8000 BP according to archaeological evidence from nearby Clifton Forge Cave. They hunted game such as bear, deer, wild hog and turkey while gathering supplies for their summer homes near present day Asheville. By 1000 BP there may have been more permanent human settlements here because artifacts found nearby show evidence that people boiled water from municipal well sites hereabouts about 10 miles east along I-95 corridor between Asheville and Greensboro during this time period! In 1629 pioneer John Rutherford arrived at Kings Mountain from England looking for new land to settle after failing to find any good spots in North Carolina following his unsuccessful colony venture at Roanoke Island some years earlier; he believed then that he had discovered America’s newest country situating “in a great bayou by himself” – other Frontiersmen followed suit when they discovered Cherokee territory lying within easy reach across rifle range extending into both states just over two centuries later! Meanwhile back home in Englandman James Craik established himself along with wife Anne at Rocky Mount Plantation northeast corner Of Salisbury Plain opposite Elizabeth City; they were probably among earliest English settlers in what became known as Craik County today! That same year Scotsman Archibald McDonald landed on Catawba Riverbanks preceded by three others including Andrew Johnson aboard his ship Discovery off shoals next Ecorse Point south side Of Lake Erie about 20 miles SE Lumberton now Wilmington NC.– all these men journeyed overland via foot or horseback approximately 373 miles (583 km) making direct landfall near Waco Rapids Landing NE Brownsville TX future Dallas/Fort Worth TX !!! We know them only through accounts written by early explorers & travelers themselves—& incidentally those records remain largely unknown even today despite being extremely valuable source material! Moore’s force destroyed twenty-six houses & killed ten whites including Captain Henry Hudson……the last recorded battle fought outside North America!!! By 1700 AD easterners had removed almost all nonnative species living within 1 mile (1 km) radius either directly or indirectly managed by Indian tribes living adjoining their lands!!!!!! Consequently many Starr Mansion ruins still standing testify too!!!!!!!!! So much history packed into such little space….but we can get started right away…...)
