Kernersville, North Carolina is a census-designated place located in Surry County, North Carolina. The population was 43 at the 2010 census. The community of Kernersville was founded in 1851 by John Fenton and his family. It was named for General James H. Kern, who had been killed during the Mexican–American War. In 1893, the town was renamed after General George Custer, who had fought in the American Civil War and died of a gunshot wound at Little Bighorn Battlefield on July 5, 1890. The post office closed in 1907 but the name continued to be used as aerville until it too closed in 1961. Kernersville began as a small farming community with few buildings other than churches and schools. By 1910, however, there were over 100 homes and businesses in the town square alone. The early years of Kernersville were difficult due to economic fluctuations caused by war prohibition and railroad construction; however, by 1920 things were looking up for the town which experienced an increase in population from 350 to 1,000 people thanks to World War II: During World War II many people came to work on munitions plants near Wilmington NC along with their families; this created a large enough pool of workers that new housing could be built without difficulty despite high demand from military personnel living nearby (and vice versa). This growth also led to more businesses being opened within downtown KernersVILLE instead of moving out into neighboring towns like Enoch or Mockspurdue because there wasn't yet anything providing proximate business opportunities for small businesses outside of city limits (or even within city limits if you count retail stores such as GNC). In 1916, Mrs. Anna Hatton donated land to make an agricultural college available to students within the town limits (the present day University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill). Mrs Hatton also made donations towards additional buildings and equipment needed for this new college including a library which opened its doors on September 3rd, 1923; an auditorium which opened its doors on November 6th, 1928; an art studionasium whichopened its doors on January 25th, 1930; and a farm complex consisting of classrooms/varied other facilities plusseveral barns/lofts etc., all were dedicated on February 12th 1945 by Drラオン・ハザード大佐当ウォルター教授。 Since 1945 there has been much development taking place within Kernersville with many new structures being erected such as: 1) A new courthouse - construction began on October 15th 2001 after years of planning and fundraising efforts led by Mayor James Covington 2) A healthcare area - construction began on December 8th 2006 after years of planning lead by local health officials Irene Pugh (now director of public health services for Durham County), Jane Easley (now assistant secretary for social welfare & human services with United States Department Of Health And Human Services), Dr Lisa Olson (director general hospital facility redevelopment program)and others 3) A large shopping mall - opening took place April 2nd 2009 followed by another grand opening ceremony May 14th 2009 under auspices of then-Mayor Jimmie Burchill
