During Reconstruction following the Civil War (1861-1865), many African Americans migrated from Central America or Africa into central North Carolina looking for work opportunities during Reconstruction days as free people of color were not allowed south of Mason Dixon Line without special permission from state authorities – something that often times led to violence against these new arrivals especially if they did not have white friends or family willing to take them in In 1865, George Waddell opened his wagon dealership on Third Street just east of Market Square known today as Waddell & Company which became one of the most important wagon dealerships outside of Cincinnati Ohio Among other things he imported wagons complete with all necessary equipment including teams,bridles and harnesses
