Kernersville, North Carolina is a small town located in the eastern part of the state of North Carolina. The population was 7,846 at the 2010 census. Kernersville is known for its apple orchards and coal mines. The name Kernersville comes from George Kern Sr., who settled there in 1835. The first permanent settler in Kernersville was George Kern Jr., who arrived in 1835. The town was named after him and his family. In 1881, Jno W. Post moved to the town from Wilmington, Delaware and founded the Post-Olin Paper Co.. In 1893, A & H Penney added a store to the community and it became known as "Post Office City." Kernersville was incorporated as a city on December 4, 1907. The city's first mayor was Mrs. C F Bassett. In 1916, John Doster started a grocery store in downtown which became one of the most popular businesses in town until it closed operations in 1951 due to economic difficulties during World War II; however, local residents continue to call Doster's grocery "Doster's". In 1951, when Interstate 95 Alternate bypassed eastward through downtown (and thus lost much business), many people decided that they would rather stay put and trade goods with friends and family than leave their homes for unknown reasons other than inconvenience or relocation rates being too high for what little permanence their current home had left them with after so many years living within walking distance of their old home base - now called downtown - but less so since I-95 had taken away all but one block of business from east side streets between Main Street (now US 421) and Second Street (now Tryon Street). However some did move out during this time period as well as some during later zoning changes that removed several blocks of center business district including post office building along with residential areas on Tryon Street formerly occupied by retail stores etcetera making downtown quite an unpopular area now compareable only to uptown Charlotte/Fayetteville NC where development has increased significantly over recent years while storefronts have been replaced by apartments etcetera
