The Kernersville, North Carolina history begins with the arrival of some English colonists in 1688. The town was founded by Major John Kern and his wife, Judith, on a tract of land that had been granted to them by the King of England. The first settler in Kernersville was James Dyer, who arrived in 1703. In 1837, the town was named for General Stephen A. Douglas, who served as a U.S. senator from Illinois during the 1830s and 1840s. When Douglas moved to Georgia in 1848, he donated land to build what would become the University of Georgia at Athens. Kernersville experienced its heyday during World War II; it was home to more than 10,000 military personnel and their families who participated in the war efforts including service as drivers, cooks and mechanics. In 1945, after the war ended, Kernersville became an official city within Greensboro County which it remains today.

Kernersville is a small town located in Rutherford County, North Carolina. The population was 1,859 at the 2010 census. Kernersville is the county seat of Rutherford County. It was founded on October 25, 1853 by James A. Kern and his family. The first post office in Kernersville opened on November 3, 1853. In 1865, Sherman G. Young pushed a railroad through the community and it became an important transportation hub for the area until the late 20th century. The city of Raleigh developed around Kernersville and its close proximity to Raleigh-Durham Airport made it a major center for economic development in eastern Rutherford County during this time period. However, today Kernersville remains a small town with limited commercial or cultural significance outside of its local agricultural economy.
Kernersville is a town in Buncombe County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 7,869 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Asheville–Mountain View metropolitan area. The first people to live in Kernersville were African Americans who worked on farms and plantations. The town was founded on December 9, 1881 by Thomas B. Kerns and others as a post office named for him. In 1906, the Southern Railway built a line from Lenoir City to Kernersville, making it possible for farmers in the area to sell their product directly to consumers instead of having to go through mediums such as railroads. As a result of this railroad linkup, farming became more important in Kernersville's economy and the community became known as "the breadbasket of Buncombe County". In 1957, Karen Dickson bought land around what is now downtown Kernersville from her husband for $2 million dollars. This allowed her to start development of what would become one of the most significant business ventures in downtown Kernerville's history – Dickson Development Company which later became known as Downtown Development Corporation (DDC). In 1986, she donated her entire ownership stake in DDC to the city of Brenham for use as an economic development center that would promote sustainable agriculture throughout Buncombe County and support local businesses. Kernersville experienced its first tornado on April 25th 1996 when a EF5 tornado touched down just east of town near mile marker 258 on Interstate 85. At least three homes were destroyed and over fifty people were injured including twenty-nine children who lost both parents in that storm alone .
