It took its name from Captain James Bogue of the U.S. Constitution Party who fought in the American Revolution and named it for General James Bogue who led an expedition against British forces on December 12, 1775 on what became known as "The Battle of Kern's River." Kernersville was built around a post office called Kernsville (1853–1857), which served both local residents and travelers along the Kanawha River until 1868 when mail service was discontinued because of navigational difficulties in that area caused by changes in water levels created by glacier retreat over time. In 1865, Captain JB Goodloe moved his family from Sparta to nearby Greeneville after purchasing 1,000 acres (400 ha) near present day Kernerville; he renamed it Greeneville after his home state of Georgia and named all his new properties for major generals or Congressional Medal winners who had participated during the American Civil War: First Lieutenant Colonel William Dickey (USA), Major General Joseph Easley (USA), Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt (Netherlands), Admiral David Dixon Porter (American Revolutionary War Naval hero), Rear Admiral John Smith Richardson (Upper Canada). In 1892, when Vance County merged with Fayette County to form Vance County again, George A. Kern donated land east of town to become what is now downtown Kernerville Park; this area also includes part of modern day downtown Greensboro which began developing around this time including commercial buildings and shopping streets known today as Main Street and Beaux Arts Avenue
