Kernersville is a small town in Rowan County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 5,730 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest municipality in North Carolina and the third-smallest municipality in the United States. The first European settlers in Kernersville were Englishmen who came to what is now Rowan County in 1772. The first store was built on Main Street and operated by two men, William Kerner and John Smith. In 1819, a log cabin was built by Hiram Aiken on Brown's creek near today's intersection of roads 158th Street and Pembroke Road. This early settler lived next door to Captain James Gaffney (a Revolutionary War veteran) until 1824 when he moved to Tennessee. At that time, there were only three homes in Kernersville - one for each man living on the farmsteads surrounding it - but by 1830 there were ten landowners with twenty-six homes total including six barns and four outbuildings. A post office was established at Kernersville on July 1, 1825, under the name of Newbern; it continued operation until it was discontinued December 31st, 1920. In 1860 an act authorized establishment of a Mechanics Institute within five miles of Rowan City; this institute formed part of UNC-Chapel Hill from 1870 until its abolition in 1911 as part of UNC- Greensboro University System. In 1865 Dr George Washington White organized a group of farmers to purchase land east of town for building a new courthouse which would be used as an agricultural college; this college became Wake Forest University after students had transferred from Chapel Hill during the American Civil War (1861–1865). Kernersville is a town in Burke County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. From its first settlement in 1792 until 1881 it was part of the Cleveland-Wilmington Micropolitan Statistical Area. The area now comprising Kernersville and other portions of Burke County were Jesse B. Finley's Cherokee Township (now within Archer County), which he patented to white settlers on March 4, 1814; and White Horse Township (now within Caldwell County) by deed from Daniel Boone on December 10, 1820. The first post office in Kernersville was established in 1792, but no buildings or residents were ever built there. It was called "Newbern" because that was where Governor John Newbern had his headquarters when he led the defense of Charleston during the American Revolution. In 1800 Karensville became one of nine towns created as part of Johnston Parish by an act of the General Assembly; it included all present-day Burke and parts of Caldwell and Person Counties except for what is now Orangeburg County. In 1881 Johnston Parish became Durham County and Kernersville became part of that county. As Durham COUNTY grew larger it desired to have its own post office so early efforts failed but in 1907 a new building was started on Main Street and named "Kernersville Post Office". The first mail service arrived here on October 15, 1907 from Greensboro via Wilmington with letters mailed from two large upstairs rooms inside a two-story frame building at 201 W Main Street which also housed a grocery store until 1915 when it burned down; this building still stands today as the citizens' library annexe located at 501 W Main Street). From 1928 through 1961 Kernersville had its own independent school board which decided how schools should be organized within Durham COUNTY before sending students to Durham PUBLIC School systems throughout those years until finally consolidation came about due to funding shortages following World War II. This event forms what we know as our current school system with KERNERSVILLE HIGH SCHOOL being built in 1957 on land donated by Mrs Ethel Weldon adjacent to her home/garage once used as an animal barn/poultry pen combination prior to that date while also serving as our high school auditorium/ gymnasium starting with events such as state championships games played here including both men’s & women’s track & field meets during 1955 thru 1956 Click Here for more pictures) This paper will focus mainly upon the history related to KernersVILLE native Jesse B Finley who founded this tiny community located off I-40 about 20 miles west northwest of Raleigh just outside HendersonCounty Limits back then nicknamed "Chinatown" after nearby China Grove(now Chatham) Soil Fertility Farmstead known then simply as China Grove Plantation originally situated near present day Chillicothe before moving hitherabout circa 1792 along with some others soon afterwards coming overland under guidance & instructiondirectlyfrom their Native American Chiefs or Captains etc... back then most likely bordered by modern day GarnerFarms Rd east side Chapel Hill Rd north side US Hwy 27 south side McClennan Rd nothing remains today except a small cemetery not far from original location ceded lots 1 acre lot back then total unincorporated area today including all present day Caldwell covenantsvenants reversionary tracts grantees 2000 acres currently lying fallow
