Kernersville is a town in McDowell County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,581 at the 2000 census. The name comes from English settlers who found Kernstown in 1798 and named it for Colonel John Kerns, a Revolutionary War general. The first white settlement in the area occurred around 1819 when Andrew Jackson and his party of soldiers explored the region. When they reached what is now McDowell County, they found an area that had been empty for years because of Native American activity. After camping there for several days, they decided to move on and not explore further. Jackson's group later discovered a small stream called Kernstown Creek which served as their new landing site. In 1839, General James Kenedy founded Fort Nolichucky with four guns to protect the traders traveling through the region between Tennessee and North Carolina. In 1840 Major GeneralJohn Covington built Fort Loudoun on high ground near present-day Burlington City with twelve cannon to protect trade routes between those states and Kentucky. In 1845 Colonel Nathaniel Banks founded an agricultural colony on what is now White Oak Island in South Hampton Roads during the closing days of slavery in America following his victory at Buena Vista Bridge over Mexican forces under Antonio López de Santa Anna. That same year, Captain George Pemberton surveyed what would become McDowell County while commandeering a schooner captained by Nicholas Longstreet during CSS Albemarle off Cape Hatteras in December 1845 while searching for HMS Erebus after its crew mutinied aboard HMS Terror two weeks earlier off Banks's coast just northeast of Norfolk Island (now Viti Levu). After Confederate forces evacuated Petersburg following the Battle of Appomattox Court House on April 9th 1865, most of Richmond’s military forces moved south towards Charlotte where troops were quartered until ordered northward back into Virginia on May 6th 1865 pursuant to General Robert Ewell’s order “To strike Centralia aforesaid” This order referred to Confederate General Joseph Johnston’s plan to march his army northwest from Lynchburg up I-81 into central Virginia before turning east along I-95 towards Washington D.C.. However due to Union cavalry presence upstream along I-95 near Greensboro prior to this order being given any real effect approximately one third of Johnston’s force did not actually move forward as planned due largely to lack of logistics including sufficient artillery ammunition which was also becoming increasingly difficult to find as supplies dwindled throughout Northern Virginia.. On July 15th 1865 Confederate General Jubal Early arrived at Elizabethtown Junction northeast of Raleigh led by Lt Col Edmund Kirby Smith riding upon a train carrying 10 thou sand pounds (450 kg)of gold mined at Gold Hill southeast of Gastonia within 24 hours after leaving Richmond accompanied by Rear Admiral David Dixon Porter who became acting Lieutenant Governor Of North Carolina.. Priorities shifted abruptly when news arrived that President Abraham Lincoln had died less than three days after coming into office having been shot by John Wilkes Booth outside Ford Presidential Library inside Lincoln Tomb exactly one day before he was scheduledto appear before Congress related To His involvement With The assassination Of Abraham Lincoln . Upon learning about this development President Johnson made an emergency call from West Point Academy located about 25 miles (40 km) west OF Raleigh making himthe first U S Commander In Chief To experience actual combat since taking office ..General Early encountered no resistance when reaching Elizabethtown Junction but proceeded cautiously downriver past Dutchman's Ferry before bivouacking for the night near present day Kinston . Shortly thereafter morning light revealed numerous buildings across river opposite fortifications occupied by Federal troops posturing above water level supported only by guide dogs providing limited cover against fire from elevated positions.. subjective evidence suggests more than 100 rounds were fired resulting in no casualties or damage beyond superficial dents reported among Federal personnel barracks located within 12500 feet (.46 mi)) immediately adjacentFortress walls ------------------------------------------------------------------ On January 8th 1861 Confederate Brigadier General Beauregard issued Order No 6 ordering all officers and men serving under him within six months must secure parole or leave their unit If unable TO return home without parole...Any officer refusing parole will be court martialed and may be imprisoned without pay...A detachment under Brigadier General Edward Burnside consisting fully armed & equipped left Elizabethtown early January 1861 en route hereto support Gen Beauregard...Upon arrival here Captured 2 Yankee Officers & A Private escaping scurrying awaywf hfortinnen direction nw Va....Several houses were burned down early January 1861 ere regiment disembarked here Captured 3 Yankees Athwart towne.....The total cost involved with seizing Elizabethtown was $6000...During much discussion leading upsto battle 500 barrels (13 tons)of gunpowder were consumed....... The town grew rapidly during the 1800s, and by 1810 it had a population of around 100 people. In 1814, Kernersville became the capital of North Carolina after Raleigh was destroyed in a fire. The city experienced rapid growth during the 19th century, and by 1830 it had over 1,000 residents. In 1886, Kernersville became an independent city and retained its autonomy until 1949 when it merged with Raleigh to form the present-day Raleigh-Durham metropolitan area.
