Kernersville is a small town in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. It is located on the southern edge of Surry County, about 10 miles (16 kilometers) east of Wilmington and 15 miles (24 kilometers) west of Raleigh. The population was 6,688 at the 2010 census. Kernersville is one of five towns in Surry County that are included in the Elizabeth City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by Methodist ministers in 1855 as a farming community on an area now known as Kernersville Plantation. In 1870, it became the site of what is now the largest cotton gin in North Carolina and one of the first to be built in America. In 1895, Kernersville became an incorporated municipality and retains its name today. The cotton gin remains operational although it has been converted into a museum open to the public since 1974. Kernersville also contains several other important historical sites, including: -the Old courthouse which served as both county seat and courthouse until 1923 when Wilmington assumed that role; -a Baptist church built between 1882 and 1886; -the original schoolhouse which was replaced by a larger building in 1896; -a store built around 1907 which still stands; -an old army barracks constructed during World War II which serves as a memorial to local soldiers who died in that conflict; and -the Swannanoa Dam, completed in 1942, which provided water for much of Surry County

Kernersville is a small town located in the southwestern corner of North Carolina. The population was 1,874 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kernersville-Shenandoah-New Bern, NC Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that would become Kernersville was first settled by Scots-Irish immigrants in 1775. The early settlement around what is now Kernersville was a swampy area that required rowing boats to reach the water's edge. In 1812, General Andrew Jackson traveled through this area and noticed the good soil and excellent location for farming here. He ordered Colonel James Bledsoe to build a farm on what is now North Main Street. This became Kernersville because it became known as Bledsoe's Landing after Colonel James Bledsoe bought the land from an Indian chief named Tuckahoe. In 1838, when John Crain purchased 640 acres east of present day Kernersville from Captain Daniel Boone, he began to develop this land into one of the most important cotton plantations in South Carolina. By 1850, Crain had over 100 slaves working on his plantation and made himself very wealthy through slave trade profits. In 1860, during America's Civil War, Confederate forces attacked Union forces at White Oak Swamp near present day Kernersville while they were fleeing South Carolina after being routed by Union General Robert Ewell at Chancellorsville Court House (now Winchester). A large force of Confederate cavalry under General Nathan Bedford Forrest charged through dense underbrush and horsemen fought hand-to-hand combat with well-armed United States Colored Troops who defended themselves fiercely until surrendering without any loss to either side
Kernersville was founded in 1815 by Nicholas Kern and his wife, Susannah. The town grew quickly due to the exploitation of coal mines in the area. In 1848, Kernsville became a state capital and its first mayor was John L. Smith. It experienced rapid growth during the 1850s when new railroads were built through the area. In 1860, Kernsville became an incorporated city with a population of around 3,000. The city experienced significant economic development during the late 19th century as it became known for its cotton mills and other manufacturing businesses. However, during World War I the city saw heavy military activity which led to increasedtriggering of natural gas emissions from local factories that caused extensive damage over time. During World War II, Kernersville again underwent significant growth as it became one of North Carolina's largest cites with a population over 10,000 residents. The city also played a key role in helping develop North Carolina's defense infrastructure and helped support Allied forces during the war. After the war ended, Kernersville experienced continued growth as new businesses arrived and rapid technological advancements occurred throughout various industries including computer programming and data storage - both of which have had major implications on its economy today.
