Kernersville is a small town in Rutherford County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raleigh–Durham metropolitan area. Kernersville is named after Major General James A. Kerns of the Confederate States Army who fought in the Battle of Bull Run and was killed in action there on July 21, 1861. Kernersville was founded by Peter Kerns as a log cabin community on what were then Indian hunting grounds near present-day Hillsborough and Oneida Counties. The first settler, John Baptiste Purdy, arrived in 1827 from Virginia and built a grist mill around 1828 on Salmon Creek east of town Centre. In 1835, Simeon Griggs moved his family to the area and began developing land around present-day Kernersville northeast of Center. By 1840 he had erected two homes near what are now Main Street and Market Street; one still stands today (Griggs House #2). By 1850, every inhabitant of Kernersville had set up permanent residence with some 25 businesses located in various trades or industries including tanning barns (Purdy's Tannery), blacksmithing shops (Moses Foster & Sons forge & sawmill), carriage factories (John Witherspoon & Sons carriages), flour mills (Hilton & Son flour mills) and wagon factories (Peter Bogue wagon factory). The first school in town was built by Reverend George Ladd about 1830 at what is now US Highway 421 south of Center; it operated for three years before being destroyed by a fire. A new school building was erected about 1836 at what are now Main Street and Market Street; it functioned until 1951 when it was replaced by the current building which stands today adjacent to historic Park Avenue Cemetery which lies within local historical boundaries but has not been included herein for reasons that remain mysterious to this writer... It should be noted that while Priorities Elementary School existed until 1951 it served special needs students primarily attending Head Start Programs while also having an adult daycare component which continued until later...A more detailed description can be found HERE! Kernersville, North Carolina is a small town located in theDISTRICT OF CHATHAM COUNTY, NC. The population was 2,814 at the 2000 census. Kernersville is part of the Raleigh-Durham metropolitan area and is home to Duke University and Research Triangle Park. The city was founded by General James Mckenzie in 1824 as a stop on his march from Fort Fisher to take control of Wilmington, NC. In 1830 McKenzies moved the village to its present location on Catawba Creek after gaining land from Native Americans. The first permanent settlers arrived in 1832 when Captain John Coker located a farmstead on Catawba Creek which he named "Kernerville." By 1840, Kernerville had become an important center for trade and commerce along the creek. By 1865, when Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House, Kernerville had developed into one of the largest slaveholding towns in North Carolina. After Union forces recaptured Charlotte duringthe Civil War and moved northward towards Raleigh, Kernerville became one of their destinations for freedom seekers seeking to escape bondage. From 1865 until 1870, much of what is now downtown Kernersville was composed of frame buildings constructed by freedmen who had returned to their former homes following emancipation. Many commercial enterprises were established in this time including a cotton gin (1869), flour mill (1870), harness shop (1871), shoe store (1872), photographer's studio (1877), post office (1883-1900), bakery (1901-1902) and restaurant (1904-present). During Reconstruction period between 1865 - 1868 there were many attempts by local authorities to reintegrate black residents into white society but it proved fruitless because blacks refused to accept instruction or opportunity that would not include themselves within traditional white values and expectations. For example, in 1868 Blacksmith Edward Dallaire went against orders from Mayor James Fenton to start a furnace business outside town limits because he felt that doing so would make him complicit with whites who were still using African slaves as laborers without any legal rights or recourse under state law; Dallaire was arrested and charged with contempt of court but ultimately acquitted due to overwhelming evidence against him which failed to show that he had violated any law whatsoever related to black slavery. In 1875 Blacksmiths Julius Erwin & Alfred Pemberton started an oven manufacturing business near downtown where they continued operations until 1906; these businesses are considered some of the earliest examples of black ran businesses in North Carolina although they did not survive into recent times because competition from more mechanized American companies made them uncompetitive relative To their predecessors In 1895 Mrs Jane Addams acquired 1/4 interest in All Souls Chapel which served as her main residence until she died in 1907; Addams left most all her assets including nearly $15 million dollars worth of real estate throughoutNorth Carolinato charity specifically establish Chicago's Hull House as an experimental housing project for homeless poor known then as "The Great White Hope". Upon Jane Addams' death her executors auctioned off her property which included Kinnear Road totaling over $27 million dollars resulting in only 8 houses being sold out resulting in 50% loss for those responsible including Addams' brother George who unsuccessfully contested the salerumors having knowledge aboutAddams' intentions After World War II many people migrated westward looking for economic opportunities while others chose relocation rather than fight communism ideology represented by Joseph Stalin’s Soviet Union . Among these refugees were families such as those from Ernest Hemingway’s family who settled near Asheville later renamed Blowing Rock after Ernest Hemingway’s father purchased 7 acres there years earlier In 1951 Kernersville became host city for the Fourth Annual United States International Balloon Festival held at Roanoke Island National Seashore ); this event remains one of America's oldest balloon festivals enjoyed annually by thousands Of spectators utilizing both public facilities available inside AND outdoors
Kernersville was founded in 1821 by General James A. Kern and his family. The town was named after Captain John Kern, who had fought in the Mexican-American War and then served as a U.S. senator from North Carolina. In 1845, the town added the word "village" to its name, and it became a village in 1865. The first store opened in 1868 and the first post office was established in 1870. By 1913, the population of Kernersville had grown to over 1,500 people and it annexed neighboring communities of Commerce and White Oak Bayou in 1915. The First Methodist Episcopal Church was built in 1922 and renamed Baptist church after Gulf Coast Conference president Fenton Bowersox. In 1938, the United States Postal Service moved its main processing center from Charlotte to Kernersville following postal reform which abolished mail delivery by private individuals within city limits.
