Kernersville is a town in Alamance County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 4,851 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Alamance County and home to the Kernsville-based American Tobacco Company corporate headquarters. The town was founded in 1786 by John Kern and his wife Susannah with the help of Colonel James Fayette Cary. The first school was built in 1787 and there were only six residents when it opened. In 1838, Kernsville became a post office with John A. Kern as its first occupant. In 1884, cotton gin pioneer Thomas J. Dooley started operating a gin here; Dooley's gin would become one of America's largest cotton gins until it closed in 1944. The town also saw an influx of railroad workers who constructed tracks and other infrastructure to support the growing industry. Many businesses within the town remain active today including restaurants, bars and stores - all owned or managed by local residents or their families since its inception over 350 years ago!

Kernersville is a town in and the county seat of Kern County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 30,912 as of the 2010 census. The name comes from James Kerns, an early settler. The first permanent European settlers in what is now Kern County were French and Spanish traders and soldiers who arrived in 1719. In 1727, James Kerns came to what is now Kernsville from Scotland with his family. He founded the original settlement on a small creek that he named for himself, which he called "Kernstown." The first store was built here by James and his brother-in-law David Caldwell in 1730. In 1814, General Andrew Johnson's army burned down the courthouse at Fernaldtown after Battle of Tarleton Ridge during the American Civil War. It was rebuilt by John Southerland and dedicated on October 3rd, 1815. Once again it served as a courthouse until 1865 when it burned down again due to fire code violations. The town proper developed only slowly until around 1830 when two brothers named John and William Beattie started farming outlying parcels to customers near their home at Mount Airy Station. In 1835 they sold their farm land to Colonel Elijah Burtis who platted what is now downtown Kernersville onto four square blocks gridiron plan with one block square for every ten citizens (later increased to twelve). Burtis' Landing became known as business headquarters for all of southern North Carolina due to its many shipping activities along the Pee Dee River which connected Raleigh, Durham and Savannah overland through this area called “the Intersection” because so many transportation companies had their headquarters hereabouts at different points along this important waterway during its heyday between 1800 and 1840 inclusive! Colonel Burtis also leased part of present day downtown Kernersville from Captain Wm Hennessee in 1839 pursuant to a plat agreement whereby Captain Hennessee agreed not only to furnish management services but also performed certain labor duties within the boundaries or limits assigned him thereby affecting no more than 2% or $1 per acre; thus becoming quite an entrepreneur!
