Kernersville is a small town in the Pender County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,717 at the 2010 census. Kernersville is located about 17 miles (27 km) south-southwest of Raleigh and 12 miles (19 km) east of Durham. It is part of the Raleigh–Durham Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was named for Peter Kerners, a settler who arrived in 1786 and donated land to the town. The first school in Kernersville opened in 1807 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. Kernersville's history goes back to the early 1800s when settlers began arriving in what is now Pender County. They were drawn to its fertile soil, woodlands, and water resources. By 1830, there were over 100 people living in Kernersville. In 1835, Julius Alder founded Alder & Company which became one of Raleigh's leading merchants and manufacturers. During World War II, many farmers fought on behalf of the United States military or worked on Victory gardens across America as part of the lend-lease program. Some residents also served in military units such as thelasses Battle Creek Infantry Battalion #2nd Regiment (now known as 3rd Battalion Carolina Infantry), 2nd Lieutenant Colonel James Hargrave's 1st Infantry Regiment during World War I; Captain Charles Ladd's 9th Marines during World War II; First Lieutenant John Wickersham's 7th Marines during Vietnam; Fifth Sergeant Leroy Jowers' Alpha Company 9th Marine Division Reserve unit from Mobile Alabama that fought against Japan at Okinawa 1945 - 1946). The post office operated from 1807 until it closed August 15, 1909; after which time it was located at Durham Junction until it reopened January 4, 1910 under new name: "Kernerville". In 1924/25 a water tower was built west of downtown by Mr./Mrs./Mr., Mrs./Emanuel Flournoy with funds raised by selling ice cream from their truck stop on Railroad Street adjacent to present day US Airways Airport just north of Uptown Shopping Center off Interstate 275 near mile marker 30A *(now mile marker 287A). The ice cream stand operated continuously until 1972 when it burned down due to an electrical short circuit caused by heavy use by airport workers *(now current mile markers 277A-277D). Many local businesses continue operation today including Karen’s Kneading Bakery & Cafe which has been open since 1949 reminiscing daily about “the good old days” before Katrina destroyed much of their business archives dating back more than 50 years! Verna’s BBQ also serves up some delicious BBQ favorites like pulled pork sandwiches with crispy slaw and macaroni salad featuring fresh tomatoes or sweet potatoes!
