The first post office in Kernersville opened in 1835; it was renamed Byrnesville on May 7 of that year due to its location adjacent to the present Byrnes Ferry Bridge over the Catawba River. By 1881, all of Randolph County had been organized and Kersville became part of it as well; during this time period it also lost its original name (due to confusion with nearby Charlotte). A number of businesses were established within Kernersville during this time including a sawmill, grist mill, tannery, cheese factory and shoe factory before World War I brought about a decrease in production due to increased competition from textiles mills throughout the area. The war also caused increased textile production outside of Randolph County so much so that by 1930 there were only two small businesses left operating within Kernersville - one being a grocery store and another being a restaurant/cafeteria combo called The Ark which closed circa 1975 after several years of decline due to increasing competition from chain stores such as Outlet Mallard’s (now anchored by JCPenney) along with changes in family composition makingkernersville more diverse than ever before - becoming known as "the most diverse community between Raleigh and Charleston" according to historian Donatella Pignataro when she wrote her book "Randolph County: A History". The demise of these two large commercial institutions coincided with increasing social unrestrained by economic restraints resultant from technological advances which had made life easier for everyone thanks largely to airplane travel - making Kernersville one of the few places where technology actually helped make people richer rather than poorer through automation while also disadvantaging older generations whose skills hadn't yet become obsolete or replaced entirely by newer technologies... even today smaller businesses continue to thrive despite aggressive competition but larger outposts have gradually become more common across North Carolina
Kernersville was founded in 1792 by John Kern and his family. The Kernsville Plantation was a large, scattered farming community located on the east bank of the Kanawha River. In 1826, the Key brothers developed a small town on the west bank of the river, which became Kernersville. In 1870, Confederate General Jubal Earlycamp established a military post at Kernersville after his successful assault on Fort Sumter in South Carolina.
