Kernersville is a town in Craven County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlotte– Myers metropolitan area. Kernersville is located on Interstate 85 and state Route 158, just east of the city of Charlotte. The community was founded in 1814 by Captain James Kenedy and his wife Anne as a station on the Yadkin River for trading with Native Americans. A post office called Kernersville was established in 1815, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1906. The name "Kernersville" derives from Captain James Kenedy's discovery of a bend in the Yadkin River where he could build a ferry to take goods to and from nearby Wilmington, NC. Captain Kenedy's Ferry Company became known as the "Kernersville Ferrymen." In 1865, Captain John Aiken purchased land adjacent to what is now Kernersville from David Browning for $5 per acre (2 km²). He began construction on what would become one of America's first large cotton plantations – Browning & Co., which still exists today as one of North Carolina's largest cotton farmers. The plantation eventually produced over 100 000 metric tons (about 350 000 pounds) of cotton annually. In 1892, cash crops such as corn and soybeans were started alongside traditional tobacco farming operations; this led to increased employment opportunities for locals throughout the early 21st century. In addition to its agricultural heritage, Kernersville has also been home to numerous businesses including banks (JPMorgan Chase & Co.) and an auto body shop that employed up to 135 people during peak years. Today there are several small businesses operating within close proximity to each other that continue contributing vibrancy and economic growth into the 22nd century - something that cannot be found elsewhere within Craven County!

Kernersville, North Carolina is a town located in Cabarrus County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 5,827 at the 2010 census. Kernersville is the county seat of Cabarrus County. The first settlement in what is now Kernersville was made by English colonists in 1764. The town was founded on the banks of the James River and named for Captain George Kern, who had served as a surveyor for the British government during the Seven Years' War. The town's first school opened in 1809 and its first post office opened in 1810. A cotton gin was built here in 1814 and became one of NC's early industrial centers. In 1821, Kernersville became part of NC's newly formed statehood and experienced rapid growth due to its location within walking distance of Raleigh (the state capital) and other major cities. Today, Kernersville remains an important center for commerce and culture in western North Carolina. The history of Kernersville goes back to 1764 when several English colonists settled near what is now known as Kernsville on the James River bank because they wanted escape from taxes levied by their colonial governors in London. Captain George Kersnett established a ferry service between Durham (north-central England) and Wilmington ( Delaware), which allowed him to trade goods with his fellow settlers while avoiding British gobbledygook questions about where he got his apparel or why he had four mules instead of two horse teams like most men at that time. Kersnett also developed a millrace that supplied water to nearby settlements until it was destroyed by flooding following heavy rains around 1800 AD: this event helped spur development along what would become known as Patton Pike into present day downtown Kernsville - which would include much later expansion upriver including completion of both Interstate 95 (and its accompanying Expressway network) and today’s busy commercial district across Main Street from civilization’s earliest beginnings: just east of today’s courthouse square you can find more than three dozen extant antebellum homes dating back to before 1840!
Kernersville was founded in 1835 by Colonel George Kern, a veteran of the Mexican-American War. The town was named for General John B. Kern, who fought in that conflict and later served as Governor of North Carolina. It grew rapidly during the mid-19th century, thanks to its location at the crossroads of two important road routes. In 1872, Kernersville became a city and underwent several expansions and renaming ceremonies. By 1912, it had reached its current size. In 1978, Kernersville became the first city in North Carolina to be awarded City status by the state government.
