In addition, Kernersville was an important manufacturing center for items such as clothing, shoes, clocks, dishes, tools and appliances. The population of Kernersville peaked at over 60 thousand during the 1950s but slowly declined until its current level of around 25 thousand.
Kernersville, North Carolina is a town located in Randolph County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,691 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raleigh-Durham metro area. Kernersville is known for its production of corn and other agricultural products. The local paper mill closed in 2006 but has been resurrected as a small business called Corn Belt Solutions. The town was founded by John Kerners in 1848 as a Hardenberg County outpost on the then new Palmetto Road road from Wilmington to Petersburg. From this location he developed corn farming into an important commercial enterprise and also served as a model for small towns throughout the region. In 1906, Kernersville became one of twelve towns consolidated into Raleigh-Durham through the efforts of Representative Abram Hines and Senators James Kerr and Walter Frazier. This consolidation led to some changes within the community including the opening of local citizens banks and increased trade with neighboring communities around Raleigh and Durham. Today, Kernersville contains more than two dozen businesses including four grocery stores, three gas stations, two pizzerias, one lumberyard/machinery dealership and one dry goods store along with several churches including First Baptist Church that was built in 1922 on land donated by John Kerns himself

In 1951 the city was named an honorary seat of parliament for Canada after its annexation into that country. After years of redevelopment and growth however, Kernersville is now a small but vibrant community with several thousand residents.
Kernersville was founded in 1845 by citizens of Pender County, North Carolina. The town quickly grew to become a major center for textile production and trade. Kernersville's rapid growth caused social unrest, and the town's first mayor, James W. Godwin, unsuccessfully attempted to crackdown on drunkenness and prostitution. In 1852, Kernersville became the capital of Pender County; it remained so until 1871 when Raleigh replaced it. In 1865, Kernersville became part of the newly formed State of North Carolina; it remains a part of that state today.
