Kernersville is a town in Forsyth County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. Kernersville is part of the Raleigh–Durham metropolitan area. It is the seat of Forsyth County government and home to the Kernersville High School district. The name "Kernersville" comes from George Washington's estate in nearby Hillsborough Parish and was given to him by Colonel John Denton as part of an act of charity in 1796. The original settlers were mechanics and their families who came from neighboring Elizabethtown to start a new life after fleeing British rule during the American Revolution. The first post office in Kernersville was established on November 8, 1824, by James Hance Jr., with one vote cast against him by fellow Republican John Gaston because he did not believe that a post office should be established within easy distance of his plantation at Big Spring (now known as Raleigh). In 1840, Abraham White donated land to become what would become Kernersville Township. In 1851, it became full county territory when Forsyth County was formed from parts of Elizabethtown and other areas east of Charlotte Harbor. As cotton became more important than wheat for America's economy during the early 19th century, many farmers abandoned planting cotton and began growing corn instead. When railroads arrived in America during this time and brought with them new markets for goods such as lumber and coal, some farmers decided to move their operations into railroad towns such as Durham or Chapel Hill due to those cities' close proximity to major railroads. In 1881-82, General William Troup conducted an exploration party through northeast North Carolina looking for new lands to settle which eventually lead him to found Morehead City south of Henderson on May 12th 1881 with his brother Richard Troup also leading part of the expedition including Wm S Weeks (laterGovernor) Drayton Caldwell (futureSenator), Jno Neely (future Congressman)and others including later Governors Pemberton Randolph (founder/CEO Coca Cola Company) Sylvester Graham (founder/CEO First National Bank)and Walter Camp who served three terms as President Ulysses S Grant's Secretary Of War under Presidents Andrew Johnson andUlysses S Grant

They built a small cabin here and began to cultivate land. By 1800, the area had become a stop on the Underground Railroad. In 1868, Kernersville was incorporated as a town by ordinance of the North Carolina General Assembly. The town’s growth was stimulated by its location at the intersection of two railroads: one serving Charlotte and another connecting Wilmington with Raleigh. The town became known for its markets, factories and agriculture. Many notable people from Kernersville have gone on to make successful careers outside of their hometown including Dr. JT Wright (a prominent doctor in Charlotte), Congressman Bob Ney (the first Republican ever elected to Congress from North Carolina) andJudge Roy Moore (the current US Senator from Alabama). Today Kernersville remains a vibrant community with an active economy that depends on its manufacturing base as well as its proximity to larger metropolitan areas such as Charlotte and Raleigh. It is home to many major businesses such as Allied Bancorp, Macy’s Department Store and BJ’s Wholesale Club; as well as several smaller businesses which support local economies within the community.
Kernersville was founded in 1795 by Captain John Kern, a British officer. The town now lies on the banks of the Yadkin River near Chapel Hill. The first post office was established in 1814, and the first store opened in 1825. The city grew rapidly during the 1830s and 1840s, due to its location along the river and access to timber and land for development. In 1865, Kernersville became one of the five cities incorporated into Raleigh County. By 1900, Kernersville had a population of over 100,000.During World War II, KernersVILLE served as Headquarters for General Motors Corporation's North Carolina division. After the war ended, Kernerville experienced heavy growth as an agricultural center until it lost its status as an urban center in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Today, Kernersville is home to a number of small businesses and restaurants and retains some aspects of its rural past.
