Kernersville is located on State Route 216 and is approximately 15 miles north of Raleigh. The community was named after General James Fayette Kerners, who fought in the American Revolution. The first settlers to Kernersville were soldiers from Virginia who moved westward during the early 1800s. By 1828, there were three families living in what is now Kernersville. In 1829, Jno A. Smith purchased land east of the creek that forms the border between present-day Kernersville and Chapel Hill. He erected a cabin and began farming operations which generated income until he died in 1835. In 1830, Captain John Pendergast bought 640 acres at what is now the eastern edge of Kernersville from Judah Wofford for $2 per acre ($40 peracre at current prices). Pendergast began farming this land which yielded crops such as corn, beans and oats until his death in 1840. In 1841, Major David Dickson sold 600 acres (2 square miles) to Andrew Hodes for £5 per mile ($10 per mile at current prices). This area became known as Middle Knob because it served as a refuge for Confederate cavalry during the Civil War. Dickson also founded one of North Carolina's first newspapers - The Observer - in 1842 while serving as editor of The Cumberland Herald newspaper near Knoxville (now Nashville). In 1850, Colonel Samuel Ashe donated 85 acres (3 square miles) northeast of town to become an agricultural colony called Asheboro Agricultural Colony with a school and dispensary for ministersman and women farmers providing medical care for their livestock and themselves. From this initial settlement growth continued until about 1880 when most of what is now Kernersville developed from farmstead to village with four churches/synagogues established: First Baptist Church (1837), Methodist Church (1839), Presbyterian Church (1851), Emanuelan Methodist Episcopal Church (1863) . Today there are only two buildings remaining from original settlement – hitching posts for roads near church property circa 1840-50 or post office building built c1930-40 – all others have been replaced by homes or other structures over time including Schools: First Baptist School & Methodist School opened 1860; Second Baptist School & Emmanuelan Methodist Episcopal School Opened 1957; Third Baptist School closed 1965; Fourth Baptist Schools open since 1990 Cotton Belt Academy started 1954

Pershing arrived in North Carolina and made his headquarters at nearby Greensboro before moving his forces to Kernersville to commandeer munitions from local factories. The war led to increased population growth in Kernersville as soldiers moved into the area to fight. In 1927, Mayor Averill Hoke founded the city's first library which remains today a major cultural resource for the community.
