This event helped lay the foundation for American nationalism and identified Jacksonville with that idealized country as well ashetaining its status as one of America's most important commercial hubs during antebellum times. By 1820 Jacksonville had become home to about 12,000 people; it had also grown beyond its original cotton-based economy into becoming a major manufacturing center for textiles, shoes, beef cattle and other goods exported to Europe and Asia via riverboats before air travel began to develop. In 1861 Confederate General Edmund Kirby Smith unsuccessfully attacked Union forces at First Battle of Bull Run while stationed in northern Duplin County; this led to Kirby Smith's ostensible entry into politics as a Democrat instead of following orders from Confederate leader Jefferson Davis not to attack Union forces coalitioned against him across eastern South Carolina (this event received little attention within either party). However, events leading up to that battle would have far-reaching consequences which embarrassed both Kirby Smith and Davis: some Union troops deserted their posts without surrendering arms rather than fight under Confederate command; significant numbers more men than planned joined Confederate forces prematurely or turned traitorous when they realized their final destination was not Atlanta but rather Richmond Va.;[1] finally nearby Wilmington—a port open to all kinds of shipping—boasted large quantities of contraband goods being transhipmed through it before Wilmington fell victim toll four days after Savannah did—raising questions about whether Charleston could handle such an influx if allowed free access.[2][3] All these factors contributed directly or indirectly (some sources say actually simultaneously) to Confederates' successful siege attempt at Fort Fisher less than two months later; this campaign marked the end phaseofoorthorough Southern conquest over much of North Carolina beginning with Pickens' Charge at Camden Courthouse on November 11 Boston Tea Party anniversary 20 years prior[4][5]. As resultof these various developments very few people outside Key West knew what was happening in central Duplin County when hostilities broke out there on April 12 1865,[6][7] although key players including Governor John Crain knew about several skirmishes taking place between Federalists who tried hardto keep things calm[8],about Burnside’s movements eastwardand about how Johnston might decide whether or notto march against Camden & Cheraw [9][10]).
