Jacksonville is a city in Duplin County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 992 at the 2010 census. Jacksonville is the second-largest city in Duplin County after Beaufort. He named the area "New Town" after Rear Admiral James Wilkinson's ship HMS Discovery which had just arrived off the coast of South Carolina. In 1807, Captain John Stevens purchased land near present-day downtown Jacksonville from Anthony Johnston for £5 per acre ($10 per km²). This land included much of what is now Duplin County and became known as "Stevens' Landing." The town started out as a small frontier settlement with only 12 families living there in 1807. By 1830, it had grown into one of the most important communities on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean due to its location strategic for shipping and trade between Charlotte and London and its position on high ground overlooking navigation channels leading to those cities. During Reconstruction Period (1865-1913), Jacksonville played an important role in helping rebuilding North Carolina following Reconstruction from 1865 until 1913 when it seceded from North Carolina due to its commitment to segregationist policies during that time period In 1898, Drury Lane Theatre opened as one of three theaters located near downtown Jacksonville on Grady Street - home at that time of some 2 dozen theater circuit theaters across America including those located in New York City (the Metropolitan Theater) and Philadelphia (The Pennsylvania Playhouse). That same year saw enactment by Congress establishing Harrison University - one of two universities chartered by President Grover Cleveland following legislation passed by his fellow Republicans during their term in office - giving rise then to present day Dooley University adjacent Interstate 95 Business Boulevard just southwest of downtown Jacksonville . From 1901 through 1903, Jax goingfield electric light company built their first line across Intracoastal Waterway linking Wilmington with Jax via Point Lookout Light Station about 1 mile offshore northeast of today's waterfront development along I-95B southbound lanes exit 265A off I-95E

The first newspaper published in Jacksonville was The Floridian on October 15th, 1825 under the name "The Pilot." By 1830 what would become known as downtown had been developed around Government House Grounds on Riverfront Avenue between First Street and Second Street. This site would become home to many businesses including grocery stores such as General Store & Provision House (founded in 1830) and Jardine’s Wharf which served as a wharf for shipping coal from what is now Hillsborough County to New Orleans during this time period; but most importantly it was here that Jacksonville gained its reputation for being “The Town That Could” due to its location next to two major rivers – Lake Erie on one side and Mobile Bay on the other – making it easily accessible both physically and economically for entrepreneurs looking to start new businesses or expand existing ones within minutes or hours Rideau Hall Ferry Terminal opened in 1901 allowing tourists easy access disembarking at either end without having to wait long periods while traveling between these two locations; becoming known locally simply as “The Ferry Landing” After years of growth however steady decline began which can be traced back directly back to World War I When vast amounts were invested into building military bases throughout America along with coastal fortifications such as batteries at Cedar Point just south of town along with thousands more jobs created throughout agriculture production lost touch with local people leaving many properties unoccupied through lack thereof market demand during this time period resulting in prices doubling from their pre-war levels making purchasing any property available almost impossible especially if you could even find title deeds extant today particularly if located adjacent to any active military installations….As times have changed however there are some tentative signs that things might begin changing again given recent investment totaling over $100 million dollars over 10 years by Jaguarsport Development LLC who own approximately 60% stake including land adjoining our current downtown area riverfront properties…This latest development will bring about much discussion among preservationists who fear potential loss not only because we currently have no plans or timeline for restoring/enhancing these assets but also because there may never be another opportunity like this again! As someone who has been involved in developing new waterfront neighborhoods both inside City limits and across Duval County over the past few decades I am excited about what this means for future developments not only Downtown but also Riverside Park acrossriver!
