Jean Baptiste Pointe de la Hache named this point after himself because he had been landed there by Captain James Cook when he visited America on his third voyage (1770-1771). In 1827, General Andrew Jackson and his forces invaded Georgia during the American Revolution and destroyed an entire British garrison at Troupes Landing just south of present day Jacksonville. This event helped make Jacksonville one of America's largest cotton trading centers and also made it a key player in helping to growththe town over time. The town quickly grew due to its location on one of America's main flood plains; it also benefited from its status as a major trade center for goods exported from South Carolina and Georgia along with its connection to several military installations including Fort Bragg (later Camp Bragg) located approximately two miles east of downtown Jacksonville. When Charleston fell to Confederate forces following their victory at Bull Run Bridge in 1861, both Wilmington and Raleigh were devastated; however, Jacksonville continued to grow even though these cities were not considered important military or economic hubs still functioning primarily as slave-based towns while Savannah changed hands multiple times between Confederate armies during gray flag times before falling under Union control late into 1865).
