Jacksonville is a city in Duplin County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 27,611 at the 2010 census. Jacksonville is the county seat of Duplin County and is part of the Raleigh–Durham metropolitan area. It is one of four cities in North Carolina along with Greensboro, Charlotte, and Winston-Salem that form the Research Triangle Park. The name Jacksonville comes from where it stands on James River: sound or jacksalad (a type of salt) was once a common means to trade goods with Native Americans living along the river. The first European settler in Jacksonville was Baptist preacher John Sevier who arrived in 1797 and built himself a small cabin on what is now called New Hope Road. In 1824, Captain David Fenton purchased land on what is now known as Black Creek Road which he named after his father-in-law General Nathaniel Banks. By 1830 Jacksonville had a population of over 100 people and by 1836 it had increased to 240 people when Major John Sowell moved into town from Lancaster County to take up an appointment as brigadier general in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. In 1865 Jacksonville became one of nine towns within Unionist South Carolina after that state seceded from the United States. When Union forces invaded South Carolina they burned all vestiges of secessionism including Jacksonville which quickly emerged as one of its most pro-Union cities. After Confederate General Pemberton's surrender at Appomattox Court House in April 1865, many Confederate officers were executed or sold into slavery including Jacksonville Mayor Jephson Covington who took off his clothes and offered them for sale to captors until he was liberated by Union forces less than two weeks later at Appomattox Court House under orders from Ulysses S Grant!
