The first English settlers in what is now Jacksonville were Robert Stanton and his brother John who landed on James Island in 1743, when the British Province of North Carolina was created from South Carolina and Georgia. They named their new colony after their friend Sir George Jackson who had been killed during the French and Indian War that year. The town site was chosen as it lay between two major rivers, the Yadkin and Pamlico Rivers, which made it convenient for trade with surrounding areas, as well as access to transportation routes including the Pinckney Trail which connected Wilmington, North Carolina to Raleigh, North Carolina. The town began to grow rapidly due to its location and became a major port for goods moving across the river boundary into Virginia. Jacksonville was chartered on December 3, 1811 by Governor Andrew Johnson under Section 8 of Act No 21st General Assembly of North Carolina (1811). On January 1st 1812 orderlies general James Cushing and William Ladd set out from Wilmington for Jacksonville with five carts loaded with goods that would arrive every day except Sunday since there wasn’t then an established Sabbath law in those days like there is today! By 1860 Jacksonville had a population of 2300 people making it one of Duplin County’s largest towns at that time; however by 1870 it had shrunk again to just over 1000 people when alluvial deposition caused most of Lake Hagarty’s water table to disappear creating anoxic soils which inhibited growth or development forever! In1900 Jacksonville had only 100 residents living on Main Street- less than one percent of its pre-deposition size! Today downtown stands virtually unchanged from its heyday thanks largely to efforts by citizens such as Betty Ford whose home still stands today on Cumberland Avenue providing excellent evidence that once something does exist – IT WILL KEEP HAPPENING!
