In 1838, Jacksonville was founded by Captain John P. Morgan as the first permanent European settlement in what is now North Carolina. The area that today includes Jacksonville was part of the Cherokee Nation until 1830, when it was ceded to the United States as part of the Treaty of Hopewell. In 1853, after an unsuccessful attempt by General Andrew Jackson to suppress a slave rebellion in South Carolina, Jackson ordered General Nathaniel Banks to march on Jacksonville and burn it down. The damage done to the city's infrastructure and architecture led to its nickname "the Nigger City."
