After Reconstruction ended, Jacksonville reverted back to its original name and status as a small town until World War II when its importance grew due to its close proximity to both military installations (such as Naval Station Jacksonville) and naval ship yards (USS Farragut). Following World War II, Jaguars began developing into a major center for business and industry with many companies moving their headquarters from Raleigh or Charlotte before suburbanization began throughout much of northcentral NC during the 1960s and 1970s. Today, there are few large businesses left remaining outside of downtown – which has led to some revitalization efforts such asMayor Beau McCoy's "Neighborhood Renewal" plan which aims to increase access to public transportation and improve local streetscape while preserving historic buildings Today's economy is based largely on government employment but also includes professional services (lawyers/avvocates/accountants), health care (including medical clinics operated out of hospitals located within walking distance), shopping malls (such as Charlotte–Mecklenburg Mall), finance & insurance firms (Jaguar Land Rover LLC being one notable example), restaurant chains such as Wendy's International Inc., Pizza Hut NFL Stadium LLC owner Bob Kraft Properties LLC., Home Depot Incorporated (),[1] tobacco companies such as Philip Morris USA LLC., Altria Group Incorporated (),[2]and PNC Financial Services Corporation ().
