Jacksonville, North Carolina is a city in Duplin County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 711 at the 2010 census. Jacksonville is part of the Wilmington–New Hanover–Wilmington Metropolitan Statistical Area. It has been the county seat of Duplin County since 1868. The first permanent settlers in Jacksonville were William and Mary Barron from Scots-Irish descent who arrived in 1786 on a slave ship from Florida. They built a log cabin on what is now known as State Street. The first post office was established in 1827 and was called Barron Station until it was renamed Jacksonville in 1868. In 1828, James Buchanan became President of the United States and ordered General Andrew Jackson to start an investigation into corruption within the military during his term as president. As a result of this investigation, Jackson sacked many generals and replaced them with men more loyal to him. This event is known as the "Andrew Jackson Investigation". In 1840, Jacksonville's second post office was established which was called New Market Station due to its location near mile marker 71 on U.S Highway 1A (later Interstate 95). New Market Station served as both a mail stop for travelers travelling northward from Wilmington and also acted as a terminus for stagecoaches heading southward to Raleigh or Charleston for trade purposes; it closed its doors around 1911 when US highway 95 bypassed Jacksonville altogether. During World War II, Jacksonville played host to several large airfields used by both American and British pilots training for Operation Overlord: Camp Blanding Air Force Base (now Joint Base McGuire-Dix) and Drew Army Airfield (now Joint Base Andrews). Other significant facilities constructed during this time include Goodyear airbase which hosted Lockheed P-38 Lightning fighter planes during 1944; Naval Training Center - now Naval Reserve Activity Fleet Marine Forces' Marine Barracks - opened in 1942; Stroudsburg Airport - later RAF Lakenheath - opened in 1942; McCoy Field Auxiliary Air Facility - today's McCoy Air National Guard hangar #2 located adjacent to Bollinger University campus - opened 1941; Pinecrest Municipal Airport – now Southwest Research Institute's Medical Aviation Campus Airport – opened 1938 After World War II ended, many small businesses were created throughout downtown Jacksonville including grocery stores such as Kroger Co., Sam’s Club/Grocery Outlet Stores Inc., JBS Wholesale Markets Inc., Jacobs Drug Store & Pharmacy chain store, Burger King restaurants etc.; truck stops such as Gulf Freight Lines LLC (now IHOP),okinetics Incorporated Truck Stop Company etc.; textile plants such as Bob Evans Restaurants Incorporated + adjoining mill complex housing over 2 million sq ft of manufacturing floor space producing clothing including women’s dresses company Alice Roberts clothestons Ltd., men’s suits company Bayless Bros./Lloyd Blankenship Sons & Co.; numerous agricultural firms; Driscoll Paper Products Company affiliated with Appalachian Wire Manufacturing llc.-produced wirewrap sheets made of recycled paper products like newsprintqsopq 6-Pack Boxes each 0·5" wide x 12·5", Assorted colors
