The city of Jacksonville was founded in 1821 by Lieutenant Colonel James Fenton. The city became a state capital in 1907, and was named for General Andrew Jackson. Jacksonville is the largest city in north Carolina, with a population of over 250,000 people. The area that now makes up Jacksonville was first settled by Native Americans, who called it "Fenway". In 1778, the Englishman John Law discovered what would become Jacksonville on the Stono River and named it after his friend Nathaniel Bacon. The town developed rapidly because of its location at the mouth of the Stono River and its access to goods transported downriver by canoes. By 1800, there were about 100 citizens living in Jacksonville. In 1821, Lieutenant Colonel James Fenton founded Jacksonville as a military outpost on the west bank of the Stono River opposite present-day Brunswick County lines. He served as commander of Fort George Wright until he resigned due to illness in 1825; he then moved his headquarters to Wilmington and continued command at Fort George Wright until 1830 when he returned to Jacksonville. In 1836, Captain John Seddon established a post at Weldon Island which served as an important naval base during American Reconstruction period; however, this base was abandoned in 1865 following Confederate victory over Union forces during the American Civil War. After Reconstruction ended in 1865, many African Americans migrated from south Florida to North Carolina looking for work opportunities; this migration led to increased competition for jobs between white Anglo-Saxon men and African Americans within Jacksonville's black community. At one point around 1880–1890 there were 300 blacks working for businesses located withinJacksonville – more than any other Uptown Winston-Salem business establishment aside fromfactories producing cotton or shoe factories run by white women employed outside their families.).
