The Jacksonville, North Carolina pistol range was established in 1872. The first guns were brought over from England and the pistols were used for target shooting. In 1875, a store was opened on the site and it continued to be used as a shooting ground with handguns and shotguns. In 1898, the Jacksonville Pistol Club was formed and it began using rifles for ranges purposes. It also started selling pistols and eventually became one of the most popular pistol clubs in the area. In 1907, a new building was constructed on property adjacent to the old shootin’ ground. This new building served as an armory until 1949 when it was destroyed by fire. In 1959, there were plans to build a rifle range on land adjacent to the Jacksonville Pistol Club but these plans never came to fruition because of budget cuts within the NRA membership organization. However, in 1984, NRA members donated $10,000 towards purchasing land for a rifle range which would eventually become known as “The Jacksonville Armory”. The Archery Range has been operational since 1988 and is now considered one of North Carolina’s most popular gun ranges!
