Jacksonville is a city in Jacksonville County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raleigh–Durham metropolitan area. The first settlement in what is now Jacksonville was made on the Scioto River by John Thornton and others in 1796. The first town meeting was held on May 10, 1807 and it became a town on December 5, 1819. The Battle of New Market fought on September 9, 1814 during the War of 1812 resulted in a Union victory and destroyed much of downtown Jacksonville which lay abandoned for many years after that battle until development began around Habitat for Humanity's old homebuilding project. This event helped to start the American city movement which Spread throughout America over the next several decades as large cities were founded around major military engagements such as Gettysburg and Boston (the latter becoming known as "The City on the Hill"). In 1898 Jacksonville hosted one of history's leading political conventions when Ulysses S Grant was nominated for president by then-U.S. Senator James Kepner from Tennessee before he won election that year against Democrat William McKinley. In 2003 Jacksonville hosted Super Bowl XXXIX between the Atlanta Falcons and San Francisco 49ers; this event led to an increase in business activity within downtown because both teams have been headquartered there since then.
