This route is known as “The Old Indian Trail” because it connected early Native American settlements near Chapel Hill with eastern Tennessee before crossing over into North Carolina about two miles east of where I-75 now meets US 52 between Waynesboro and Matthewsville.

Indian Trail ran from the Atlantic coast of North Carolina to the Tennessee state line. It was one of the first major trails in America and was used by Native Americans and white settlers alike for travel, trade, and exploration. The trail was also used as a route for slaves escaping to freedom.
