Ammunition history in Indian Trail, North Carolina began with the first shot being fired in the town on July 8, 1868. The town was named for General George Armstrong Custer, who fought in the American Civil War and is considered one of the most celebrated military heroes of that conflict. In 1872, there were only a few rifle ranges in the area and ammunition was imported from England. The first statewide political party was formed in Indian Trail in 1888 when two men- John Fenton and Wm. Gorman- organized what would become known as the Republican Party of North Carolina. In 1886, an armory and store were built to serve the community and it became known as "the Arsenal." Ammunition production increased rapidly during World War I due to demand from both America and Great Britain. During World War II, munitions production continued to grow as Americans entered into war against Nazi Germany. By 1945, Indian Trail had become one of the largest producers of ammunition in North Carolina. The arsenal continued operations until 1959 when it closed down due to economic reasons. Today, parts of the old armory remain active as a museum while other portions have been demolished or converted into housing units.

In 1861, Indian Trails became an initial segment of US 10 when it was rerouted east from its original path through Greensboro to intersect NC-183 northeast of Rockingham County. This connection made it possible for people living east of NC-183 to enter North Carolina without leaving their county borders again.
