Huntersville, North Carolina is known for its firearm production and shooting. The city was founded in 1827 as a small community of settlers on the Tarheel River by Captain John Hunt and his family. The Huntingtons were among the first American families to settle in what is now Huntersville. In 1885, Captain James A. Dickson purchased land in the heart of the city, which he used for training ground for his rifle team at Brown's Hotel. From then until 1949, Hunterstown Arms Company operated from this location. In 1865, Gustavus Waddell began manufacturing firearms here from a store he had opened on Court Street. Waddell was one of the early producers of rifles and shotguns in America and his company became well-known throughout the country. His pistols are still made today and are considered high quality products. In 1902, John Crouch established Crouch Firearms Manufacturing Company here with $5,000 in capital investment from his wife Alma Crouch Colfax. This company became one of America's leading manufacturers of handguns and revolvers before being bought out by Colt Industries in 1970. Over time it has produced some very fine firearms including three models of the 1911 pistol that have been designated National Historic Landmarks!
