Huntersville is a town in Alamance County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 9,918 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Alamance County. The first permanent settler in Huntersville was James Whitehead in 1827. The town was named for General John Hunter who fought with General Robert Ewell during the American Revolution. The first post office was established in 1828 and served as the village's main business center until 1840 when it became the town site. A courthouse and jail were built in 1851-53 and 1860-64 respectively; both were replaced by a new courthouse and jail structure which opened on October 1, 1961. A cotton gin was built in 1859 by W P Hogg to process local cotton for export from Albemarle Sound through what is now known as Wilmington, NC to Durham, NC. In 1865, Ulysses S Grant visited Huntersville while on his way to battle Confederate forces at Durham Station and ordered all slaves remaining within Union lines surrendered without further delay or ceremony. This event led to increased immigration to North Carolina from southern states following the war and helped fuel economic growth throughout Reconstruction Era North Carolina In 1951, Huntersville Elementary School began serving students from neighboring towns of Carrboro (to the north), Matthews (to the east), Salisbury (to the south) and New Bern (to the west). That same year also saw construction of Highway 8 near present day Interstate 95 northwest of town beginning its long journey eastward toward Raleigh endangering future development within limits set by then Governor William Easley On December 12th 1953 an F5 tornado struck central Huntingdon Township killing one person & injuring 10 across 3 counties including 5 students at Gaston HS just past mile marker 321 US 20 concurrent with another large tornado forming over Mill Creek just shy of current day I-95 exit 217 about 15 miles southeast of town originally thought to be misspelled “HUNTERVILLE”
Huntersville was founded in 1792 by Hugh Lawson. The town grew quickly and soon had a population of over 100 people. In 1814, the United States Annexed North Carolina, and Hunterstown became part of Raleigh. In 1865, the Union Army burned down most of Raleigh, including Huntersville. The town slowly rebuilt and its population increased to about 500 people by 1870. By the turn of the century, Huntingtons had become a major center for cotton production. However, during World War I, Huntersville was bombed by Nazi Germany and lost many innocent lives. After the war, Huntingtons struggled with economic decline until it regained some prosperity in the 1970s through investments in education and job creation.
