It served as both a schoolhouse and courthouse until 1974 when it was destroyed by fire; however, reconstruction has since restored it to its original condition .

Huntersville is located in the Pee Dee Valley of North Carolina, just east of Wilmington. The town was founded in 1792 by General James Robertson as a trading post on the Nashua River. When white settlers arrived in North Carolina in large numbers during the early nineteenth century, they quickly discovered that Native Americans were operating extensive fur-trading operations along both sides of the Bean River (now known as I-95). This led to a heated competition between European traders and Native American leaders for control over this valuable resource. Eventually, European settlers formed two exclusive trading companies: one operated out of Fort Meade onthe Transylvania Creek; another conducted business out of what is now Huntersville. These two firms quickly emerged as dominant players throughout much of eastern North Carolina due to their monopoly on Indian trade. In 1792, General James Robertson established his trading post at what is now Huntersville because he felt confident that he could control access to this important resource alone given his position as commander-in-chief of militia forces occupying parts of eastern North Carolina at that time. The establishment of this post helped create a strategic geographic advantage for Robertson against other European traders who sought to expand their enterprises into areas beyond their grasp - an advantage which would later be called “the Hunting Ground Theory”of mercantilism.*[1] With access to reliable supplies ofIndian tobacco and other goods unavailable outside his territory*, Robertson soon became one of Americas leading traders and entrepreneurs.*[2] His success finally allowed him wealth enoughto build himself a comfortable life – something which many Native Americans were unable or unwillingto do given their traditional way OFlife*.[3] For years thereafter*, Robertsonelected without interruption fromamongsthis fellow Indians* [*4]* [*5].
