The Huntersville Rifle and Pistol Club was formed in 1889. It is the oldest rifle and pistol club in North Carolina. The club has been meeting regularly since then to shoot rifles, pistols, shotguns, dogs, cats and other animals.
Huntersville is a town in Sampson County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 9,276 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous municipality in Sampson County after Elizabeth City. The town of Huntersville was founded in 1853 by Scots-Irish immigrants landowning farmers. They named their new settlement for John C. Hunter who had come to NC from Virginia as a surveyor and then become an early cattleman and developer of the area around Raleigh. By 1865, Huntingtons had developed into a small agricultural community with over 100 families. In 1881, following Reconstruction, Hunterstown became the first African American village in Sampson County when it was chartered as a townsite by General James “Pete” Broyles Sr., Superintendent of Education for the newly reconstructed South Carolina state government. In 1870s there were only 2 black residents of Huntersville while by 1900 there were 20+. The men worked on farms while women took care of children and housework until they could marry white men and take care of themselves again; this pattern continued until World War II when black soldiers served in combat areas throughout North Carolina which brought about increasing integration within the local communities; however, some aspects such as job opportunities and housing remained segregated through many years until all races living together officially occurred during Hurricane Katrina in 2005 when all homes were destroyed or damaged save for one house that still stands today (the home has been repurposed into two condos). Today Huntersville remains an overwhelmingly white community with over 90% identifying as Caucasian according to 2000 Census data but many African Americans have chosen to live here since its inception because of its proximity to Raleigh/Durham (where they can find jobs), access to education and job markets, excellent infrastructure including built-in water filtration systems and other amenities available only to those who are white or middle class. In 1907, upon completion of studies at UNC Chapel Hill, students traveled to Raleigh to take classes at Memorial College before returning home to start their own businesses or attend university lectures. This trend continued until World War II when residents turned their attention back to their towns and farms which they continued to use for agricultural production until afterthe war when they switched focus towards manufacturing products such as textiles and automobiles. Today, Huntersville remains an important community within its own right with a rich history that can be enjoyed by all who visit it!
