From the early 1800s until after World War II, it was home to a large number of Scotsmen who worked on farms and businesses throughout eastern North Carolina. Many of these men contributed materially to the development of their communities, including founding churches and schools, erecting roads and bridges, or manufacturing products such as flour and tobacco. During Reconstruction Period (1868-1912), many African Americans relocated to Huntsville from other parts of southeastern North Carolina due to political instability following Reconstruction. This period saw great change in Huntsville – both physically and socially – as African Americans began working side by side with white residents in what would become known as “the integrating process”. This experience led some African American citizens to form their own organizations specifically aimed at improving conditions within their communities during this time period: The National Association for Colored Citizens (NAC) was founded in 1865; The Negro Business League was organized in 1920; The United Negro College Fund was created in 1955; etc. As black residents experienced increasing economic opportunities following reconstruction, they also began looking for ways to contribute positively to their local communities through education, business ownership, social activism, or political representation. In 1937, after several years of planning by various community leaders., Hunter'sville voters ratified an ordinance establishing a zoning commission which would help promote development within the town limits according to specific needs expressed by property owners/businesses within those limits. Over time this commission became known as “The Huntingtons” because its members were typically composed predominantly of Huntersvillians themselves (henceforth referred to simply as “The Commission”). In 1942-43 The Commission developed plans for developing much larger areas adjacentto downtown that would eventually become known collectively as Hunt'sville Heights . These developments included erectionof additional buildings on Main Street , extensiveexpansionoftheacres surrounding Main Street Park & Recreation Area ,"and"thecreationofthespacefor public Culture & Recreational purposes."Manyof THESE projects were completed prior tounlimited funds availabletothingsuchastructures&areaswitnessedbylater generationsWhen HUNTERSVILLE VOTED TO REMAIN AN UNIFORM CIVILIANSHIP FOR BLACK PEOPLE IN NORTH CAROLINA THE COMMISSION WAS TRANSFORMED INTO THE HUNTINGTON CENTRAL HERITAGE BOARD AS A SIGN OF POWER AND RESPECT
Huntersville was founded in 1771 by Captain John Smith and his wife, Katherine. The town was named for the 600 Indian hunters who had come to help survey the area. The first store in Huntersville was built on the corner of North Tryon and East Walnut Streets. In 1838, Huntingdon County was formed from parts of Cumberland County. In 1851, the county seat moved from Huntersville to Radcliff.
