In 1784, Huntersville was founded as a small community in the Pisgah Mountains of North Carolina. The town quickly became an important center for hunting and fishing, and its residents developed a strong interest in firearms. By 1800, Hunterstown had become one of the most prosperous towns in eastern North Carolina. Gun sights were first invented in Huntersville by Nathaniel Payton and his brother Nicholas. Payton designed a sight that allowed shooters to see their target clearly while firing at it from any angle. Huntersville is a town in Alamance County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 10,817 at the 2010 census. The downtown core of Huntersville is home to the Alamance County Fairgrounds and two shopping malls - the main one and One Stop Shop. The first European settler in what is now Alamance County was John Rutherford in 1795. He built a small cabin on the present-day grounds of South High School in what is now Huntersville. In 1814, Rutherford organized a band of Scotsmen who called themselves the Huntingtons and traveled to Lenoir County looking for land to settle. They found some grant lands there but returned empty-handed in 1816 because they could not agree on terms with the government officials there. In 1825, Samuel Caldwell donated land northeast of town for use as a county seat. However, due to opposition from local landowners and lack of support from the state legislature, Caldwell's donation did not come through until 1830 when it was named after him as part of a larger effort by then Governor Tryon to create statewide distinctions between eastern and western counties. John Hunt founded Hunt Paper Company on his farmstead near what is now Carytown Road in 1836 as an alternative means of exporting paper pulp (a product made from animal dung). Hunt became one of America's leading paper manufacturers during the 19th century thanks to his innovation – making Useable Pulps which were shredded into small pieces before being used – this allowed him to continue producing paper even during difficult economic times without having to rely on other sources such as China or India where raw materials were often cheaper but quality lower overall. The community that developed around Hunt Paper Company soon came to be known as "Huntstown". By 1850, almost all men living within a few miles radius had their own household businesses – including blacksmiths, farmers, printers etc., which helped make Huntsville an important center for trade and commerce during its early years. At about this time too, Huntingtons began referring collectively to themselves as "the people" or simply "the hounds". In addition to its importance as an industrial center throughout much of 19th century North Carolina*, Huntstown also played host annually bothto NC State fairs* (1901-06)andto Raleigh's Centennial Exposition (1876-79), becoming wellknown across central North Carolina for its beauty more than its agricultural production*.
